The Borderworld Series Z Sabre Very Heavy Fighter is a very heavy fighter in the Borderworld line of vessels. It is used mainly by the Outcasts and Red Hessians in the system where their primary base is located, as well as the adjacent systems around it. Both Lord Hakkera and Cobo also flew Sabres while escorting Edison Trent to the New Berlin jumphole in the Sigma-13 system while the latter was on a mission to exfiltrate The Order agent Herr Von Claussen from Rheinland territory.

Infocard Entry[]

As commerce and some economic freedoms began to flood the Border Worlds, so did greater access to technology and the need for change. The Sabre is the fruit of the border worlds’ ingenuity and pure capitalism coalesced into one lethal embodiment. This ship boasts enormous power capacity as well as extreme defensive capability.

Comments[]

The Sabre is tied with the Order 07A Anubis Very Heavy Fighter for being the fighter with the greatest number of forward-firing gun and turret hardpoints combined, at 7. However, the Sabre is able to equip up to Class 10 guns while the Anubis can only equip up to Class 6 guns, so the Sabre is capable of delivering a higher amount of raw damage.

The Sabre is frequently compared to the Civilian CTE-6000 Eagle Very Heavy Fighter and Corsair M10 Class Titan Very Heavy Fighter. While it turns slower than the Eagle, the Sabre has a slightly better hull rating and the most forward firepower of the three, and although it has the same turn rate as the Titan, the Sabre's lower mass makes it more responsive to thruster inputs. In addition, the Sabre has better strafing ability, being able to move sideways faster and at a higher speed. However, the Titan's unique powerplant is better than the Sabre's, allowing it to sustain fire for longer periods. Among the three, the Sabre is also technically more "widely available" as it can be purchased from two different factions, whereas both the Eagle and Titan can only be purchased from bases run by either the Zoners or Corsairs respectively. However, access to the Sabre requires being at least neutral with either the Red Hessians or Outcasts, both of whom are hostile to the player by default and upon completing the singleplayer campaign.

Due to the amount of forward firepower it is capable of dishing out, the Sabre is widely considered one of the best ships in the game for fighting NPCs. Along with both the Eagle and Titan, the Sabre is considered an "end-game vessel" and the ultimate purchase for most players playing Freelancer post-campaign.
