Freelancer: HD Edition (HDE) is a standalone mod for Freelancer that incorporates official and numerous community-made patches, quality-of-life improvements and audio-visual enhancements for the game while keeping its look and feel as close to Freelancer as possible.

HDE incorporates the official 1.1 patch by Microsoft, as well as a selection of fixes and additions created by the community, on top of even more quality-of-life improvements made especially for HDE. The mod's full list of changes over Freelancer includes, but is not limited to:
- Full compatibility with Freelancer, allowing save games and multiplayer servers to be migrated from Freelancer to HDE (and vice versa) seamlessly
- HD textures and interface elements, including options for alternative/dark/flat interfaces
- Higher quality music
- Several fixes and plugins created by Jason Hood, such as:
- Call Sign plugin
- Console plugin
- Jason's Freelancer Patch v1.25
- Story Factions plugin
- Turret Zoom plugin
