The Single Player Campaign is set in the year 800 A.S. and follows the story of Edison Trent, a young Bretonian mechanic who had ventured into the Border Worlds to find a fortune but was caught up in the Destruction of Freeport 7 and lost everything except 500 credits. The player takes control of Trent as he tries to rebuild his fortunes in the midst of a rise in crime within the Houses and an increasingly aggressive Rheinland foreign policy.
The campaign is a core aspect of Freelancer's single player mode and is split into 13 distinct missions, starting and ending with Trent landing on Planet Manhattan in the New York system. The missions will have Trent exploring all four Houses to varying degrees, small parts of the Independent Worlds and Border Worlds, and a handful of campaign-exclusive systems set in the Edge Worlds. In between missions, the player may be given free rein to increase Trent's net worth to a set amount before the next mission is available, using any means necessary. These periods are known as "freetime".
Completing the campaign typically leaves Trent with a decent mid-game vessel and sufficient credits to explore the rest of the Sirius Sector on his own.
